Household Toxic Waste

Toxic waste is dangerous, hazardous or poisonous to humans and nature even in small quantities. It must always be sorted out separately from other waste. Different types of toxic waste must not be mixed with each other either or placed in the non-recyclable waste. If placed in with the recyclable waste, it will prevent the recycling of that waste.

It is a good idea to always store the toxic waste in its original packaging. If, however, the packaging is changed, it is important to label the container according to its contents. For the safety’s sake, it is important to always know what is inside each packaging. When there is an orange warning square on the package, it must always be placed in toxic waste.

It is the duty of the person producing the toxic waste to take it to the toxic waste collection. Household toxic waste can be taken to collection free of charge, except for the electric and electronic items.

Usual household toxic waste includes:

  • waste oils and oil filters

During each spring, there is a circulating toxic waste collection in Jyväskylä. The timetable is published, for example, in city’s information paper and on the internet before the collection starts.

Individually collected toxic waste:
  • Medicines and thermometers with quicksilver are collected by the pharmacies.
  • Pressure treated wood: loads that are less than a cubic meter is collected by Starkki, Puukeskus, K-rauta at Tourutorni and Mustankorkea Waste Treatment Centre.
  • Asbestos: collected against a fee at Mustankorkea.
  • Disposable and rechargeable batteries can also be taken to the collection bins at the recycling points.

Empty and dry paint pots are not toxic waste. Those can be taken to scrap metal collections.

Parts of the toxic waste can be recycled after treatment. These are, for example, parts of batteries, waste oil and the glass and metal parts of fluorescent tubes.
