All Other Waste
Garden waste
Sticks, branches, waste from
raking and other garden waste can be taken to Mustankorkea Waste
Treatment Centre all year around for a charge that is payable on it
(during 2004 €6.10/day).
Used car tyres
Car tyres that are no longer
usable will not be taken with other waste, but in reasonable
quantities (4-8 tyres/customer) they can be returned to a tyre
dealer. Returning used tyres to the dealer does not obligate the
customer to buy new ones. If the rims are still attached, the dealer
will charge the customer for taking them off.

Large and heavy waste items
Large and heavy waste items,
like furniture and household appliances will be taken in at
Mustankorkea. Usable items can be taken to the recycling centre or
to the second-hand market. It is a good idea to ask the retailer, if
they will take care of the old furniture or appliances for you when
buying new ones.
Waste needing a special treatment
Window and mirror glass is
not suitable for normal recycling. Small quantities can be packed
and placed in non-recyclable waste bin so that it will not cause
danger to the other bin users or the dustman. Larger quantities of
window and mirror glass must be taken to Mustankorkea Waste
Treatment Centre.
Ashes and soot must be
cooled down properly and then packed tightly before placing in the
non-recyclable waste bin. Clean wood ashes can replace chalk in the
gardening, so it can be used in your own garden as a fertilizer.
Household grease and oil
used in cooking must be packet tightly in a container and it can
then be placed in the non-recyclable waste bin – never into the
drain.
Ammunition, cartridges,
explosives, flares or fireworks are not suitable to be collected
with toxic waste because of security reasons. Advice on disposing
them can be obtained from the police. Old flares to be disposed can
also be offered to the retailer that sells them.
Radioactive waste:
Guidelines can be obtained from Finnish Centre for Radiation and
Nuclear Safety (Säteilyturvakeskus), tel. 09 – 759 881. A fire alarm
has small quantities of radioactive material, but it is not
considered toxic waste, because it is a very small quantity and
encased in a steel capsule. After the batteries have been removed,
the fire alarm can be placed in the non-recyclable waste bin.
Hypodermic syringes and
needles as well as other items that prick or cut must be taken to Mustankorkea or to the pharmacy. The waste must be labelled and
packaged so that it will not cause danger to a person handling it. A
good packaging is, for example, a hard plastic tub or a bottle that
has a lid or a top and has been labelled with a warning “Sharp
items”.
