Jyväskylä is known around the world for Alvar Aalto, Finlands internationally most famous architect and designer.
Aalto designed numerous buildings for the city where he grew up, including several on the University of Jyväskylä campus, the Workers Club, Säynätsalo Town Hall and Jyväskylä City Theatre.
Aaltos best known building in Finland is undoubtedly Finlandia Hall, Helsinki. Aalto was responsible, together with his wife Aino, for the design of furniture and objects in glass which have become Finnish design classics.
Aaltos form-language continues to strike a chord with fans of architecture and design around the world. Aaltos architecture is characterized by a desire to make the landscape part of the design as a whole as well as to create buildings that are both beautiful and function well. Jyväskylä is also the home of the Alvar Aalto Museum.
