The same type of variation is followed internally to emphasise the hierarchy: the brickwork in the more important spaces is laid in a more decorative manner. The bricks for the town hall came from the Lappila brickworks and, as at MIT, it was important to avoid too even a wall surface. For Aalto, brick symbolised time and the presence of history.
