BOATSHELTER FOR ALVAR AALTO'S BOAT

The shelter for Alvar Aalto's boat "Nemo propheta in patria" is built on Aalto's experimental house's courtyard. The shelter contains the boat, which Alvar Aalto designed for himself. An international designing contest was arranged to desing the shelter for the boat. The contest was held in 1996.

There were 223 proposals in the contest. The first prize went to students of architecture Claudia Schulz and Anne-Mette Krolmark from Denmark. The title of the proposal was "Arc".

The final design was made by Claudia Schulz and Anne-Mette Krolmark according to their proposal. Construction plans were made by engineer Jouko Rossi from Jyväskylä. The shelter was built by carpenter Erkki Toivainen from Jyväskylä. Transportation of the boat from Säynätsalo to the shore of Muuratsalo was arranged by Säynätsalon Riento.

The facade of the boatshelter was made of laths of larch and the frames were made out of pine wood. The shelter was covered by felt. A big door is possible to open to allow closer look of the boat. When the door is closed the figure of the boat can be seen through the laths.

After the shelter had been finished the routes around Aalto's experimental house have changed. The route goes first to the shelter to look the Nemo propheta in patria boat, which Alvar Aalto used to get to his house in Muuratsalo. The path leads past the sauna towards the main building.
