Säynätsalo municipality joined the town of Jyväskylä in January 1993. It was decided that the local administrative board would situate on Säynätsalo.
Local administrating was adapted to local needs.

Säynätsalo
has been an industrial society since 1897. Own
municipality was founded in 1924. The local
administrators had had a long history even before joining
the town of Jyväskylä. The use of the industrial areas
was the base for the joining. Many practical arrangements
also favoured the joining.
The
local administration still exists. The City Council of Jyväskylä elect the local
municipal board during referendum. The board
includes thirteen (13) members.
Some areas of administration have been transferred to the city of Jyväskylä.
Some of the tax
income of the area were reserved for the local council.
This way the elected members had also some economical
influence, which gave the possibility to develop some
local tasks, which were necessary. Since 1999 the local
funds are available after consideration.
In 1997 it was hundred
years of the first habitation of Säynätsalo. There were
many occasions during the year, When Säynätsalo
celebrated its memorable year. The highlight of the year
was on 9.8.1997 when a play called "Säynätsalon synty",
the birth of Säynätsalo, had its premier. The local
council had also made the medal of Säynätsalo in an
honor of the 100-year- celebration.
In Muuratsalo, at Alval Aalto's experimental house, the boat of Alval Aalto "Nemo propheta in patria" got a new boatshelter. An international designing contest was arranged to desing the shelter for the boat in 1996.
The renovation of Säynätsalo town hall began in 1995 due to damage caused by moisture. The renovation was finished in 1998.
