In 1945, Aalto took part in the Nynäshamn town hall competition with the Swedish architect Albin Starck. Nynäshamn is in the Stockholm archipelago, about 50 km south of the city. In terms of nature and terrain, Nynäshamn has a great deal in common with Säynätsalo. Aalto’s entry, which went under the pseudonym ‘Song of the pines’, departed from most of the other entries in that Aalto used the rocks in the area to emphasise the monumentality of the building.
