Preparatory teaching for comprehensive school
Those foreign students who come to Jyväskylä and don't attend teaching in English participate in preparatory teaching for comprehensive school. In this teaching they become familiar with the Finnish vocabulary and basic terms and become acquainted with the Finnish culture. The usual length of studies in preparatory teaching is one class year, after which the student moves to a support school closest to the student's living area.
Preparatory teaching is given in Huhtasuo school (grades 1 - 6). Halssila school
(grades 1 - 6), and Huhtaharju school (grades 7 - 9).
Teaching of the student's mother tongue
There is also teaching of the students mother tongue available for foreign students for two hours per week. Teaching groups will be organized if there are at least four students studying the same language.
JOPO-class
Huhtaharju school has a small 'JOPO'-class, whre the 8 and 9 grade
curriculum can be studied with a flexible combination of school work, field
trips and learning in the workplace. The group is primarily for secondary school
immigrant students who need special support in their schooling and learning
Finnish.
