Union activities

One way of using spare time is to be active in different associations. Often, immigrants have formed associations to preserve their own culture and to integrate into the new society.

Just three people could already set up an association, but it is important to get more people to support the association. People that are invited to the constitutive meeting are the kind that could also be possible members of the association. The initiators will think beforehand who would be invited to discuss the forming of the association.

The aim of the association

The aim of the association is to be non-profit making. This means that the association would be working for a good and real cause. The aim of the association could be, for example, the preservation of one’s own language or religion, organising a chance for a common sports or recreation, or introducing one’s own culture to others. The aims of the association and the methods of implementing its activities are so closely linked, it is practical to discuss them at the same time. There are two questions to be discussed:

What is the aim of the association, in other words, what do we want to achieve with the activities of the association?

How is the association going to be performing, in other words, how are we going to achieve our aims or what do we want to do in our association?

The rules of the association must define the following:

Registering of an association

The register of the associations is held by the National Board of Patents and Registration of Trademarks. The register holds the following information on each association: memorandum of association, the rules, names and home counties of the chairman and other members that are able to sign their name on legal documents on behalf of the association. Usually, the names of those members who are able to sign their name on legal documents on behalf of the association are also stated in the rules of the association, the chairman always being one of them. The registration authority checks that the association is not against the law and good manners or otherwise unsuitable. The information on the register of an association is open to all and anyone who wishes to see it can take a look at it.
